Start or Staging Dates
What is a Staging Date?
Each employer will be given a staging date by the Pensions Regulator. This staging date is the last day that an employer has to have in place an appropriate auto-enrolment scheme for their employees.
The dates for each company will depend on the number of people in the company PAYE scheme on 1 April 2012.
When are the Staging Dates?
The first dates commenced on 1st October 2012 for companies with more than 120,000 employees. The dates then moved monthly through to 1 July 2014 for small companies with 50 - 89 employees.
Since then the dates have been dependent on PAYE reference numbers for companies with less than 50 employees. The allocated staging date cannot be postponed but in most cases it will be possible to bring it forward if that is more convenient to the company's accounting dates.
Please note that these staging dates are the last dates and that employers should allow several weeks as a minimum to set up a scheme because it is anticipated that the pension companies will be inundated over the next 3 years.
